The good thing about Christianity is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it

Ok, let’s face it not many people are going to be surprised by this information, but I got annoyed again.  Like anyone who regularly goes on Facebook I see various pictures with quotes etc on them and for the most part I let them wash over me without bothering to engage.  But one did a brilliant job of summing up what I think is wrong with so many people’s understanding today.  What was it?  Well take a look yourself:

Now, what is wrong with that?  Well, on one level, nothing.

Let’s ignore the annoying fact that once again the word “science” is being used incorrectly, as some sort of all-knowing entity.  Science tells us … science has discovered that … science has revealed … etc, etc.  Anyone who actually understands science will admit that these sentences are, at best, shorthand for saying “People have used the scientific method in order to discover that” and at worst demonstrate a shocking lack of understanding of what science actually is!  Unfortunately this use of language is so common that most people don’t even notice and this unconscious shift takes place which changes “science” from being a method of discovery and investigation into an all-knowing entity – ironically into a “god” like figure.

But, like I say, let’s just ignore that common and annoying problem and instead admit that on one level it’s right.  The facts that are discovered by the scientific method are, indeed, true whether you accept them or not.  This is quite, quite true.  No doubt about it.  Couldn’t agree more.  Fact is fact.  Believe what you want, the facts will remain the facts.  Absolutely, 100%, true … However, my problem is not with what is being said, but in what is being implied, which is, in fact, highly and unspeakably stupid!

What is being implied is that, while science is “true whether or not you believe it”, other things are not.  Just a moments thought will demonstrate just how ridiculous this is.  As I said above, fact is fact and facts will remain facts whether or not you believe them.  If the fact is that there is no god then my own Christian belief makes absolutely no different to this whatsoever.  Likewise, if the Christian faith is true then it IS true and, whether or not some else believes, it will make absolutely no difference whatsoever to it being true.  Similarly, for the Jewish faith, the buddhist faith, the Islamic faith, or none of these and we are in fact made by the giant spaghetti monster.  Whatever, the point is that which of these, or any other options, are true, IT WILL BE TRUE WHETHER OR NOT YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!  The ridiculous notion that one thing is true for you and another thing is true for me is just that … ridiculous!

So, for goodness sake, can we stop implying that only what is discovered by the scientific method is fact, because, fact is fact whether or not you believe it!  And, so, for that matter, is the Christian faith!

You are obviously not a biology major and I would be rather surprised if you even understand science yourself. The thing about science is that it requires you to have a brain and… to apply it. When you can’t understand science, you resort to folklore. It’s okay to admit you are not that intelligent, your blog has spoken for you.
